March 2005

FROM PASTOR RICK’S COMPUTER:
FOR MY IRREGULAR ATTENDERS

Lent is meant for Christians to return to church and renew their faith-walk. It is sort of analogous to when the “Tax Man” declares an amnesty and invites those who are delinquent in paying to catch up. Lent is our spiritual catch-up window of opportunity.

Lent’s theme is sounded on Ash Wednesday from Joel, “Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”

I strive to be the same pastor to all Immanuel members and friends. However, there are 550 plus of you to one of me. Thus, as over the years the priorities of the Council change and the demands of the pastoral position develop (and I do not grow younger), I rely more on worship to connect with all Immanuel members.

But then, worship within the eternal family of God is the primary purpose God created you for and saved you for (acc. to “The Purpose Driven Life”). The Bible describes worship and learning more as the first things new Christians did.

I desire to reverse a “downward” worship trend for the sake of God’s glory. I appeal to you, in the Savior’s name and grace.  If:

…you have stopped coming to church, please return before the Easter celebration;

…the weeks between worship have grown longer; please return more frequently;

…you were regular but have become sporadic, please return to regularity.

Return and renewal of our faith-walk is the church’s call to every one of us: regular or irregular. For you, who will see yourself as “irregular,” returning to worship and giving is an outward sign of your inward turning to seek Christ’s face anew.

When you come, I will greet you with warmth and “open arms” for my joy will reflect that of the waiting Father.

A TREND OBSERVED

Futurist Len Sweet observed, “Whenever something becomes accepted as a trend, it no longer is.” At the risk of turning it away, I would like to identify a trend:     The new cadre of church volunteers is younger retired people.

A generation ago, the core was our homemakers. Then came the decades when “everybody” was working outside his or her homes. Now the number of homemakers is increasing as many couples try to find a way for one parent to be at home while the children are younger. Yet, the most significant social change has come in the retirement age.

With the state buying many out, GM encouraging employees to leave at 30 years or even before, schools offering retirement incentives to higher salaried staff and so forth the number of youthful retirees has grown larger. These are people in their 50’s and 60’s with health and energy, talent and gifts, and time to give for meaningful activity. In fact, to serve meaningfully is essential to our spiritual health and growth.

The Church is one of those places to serve and build up God’s people. “I took early retirement from the state in 2002, but I do a lot of volunteer work with the church. I think this midweek service is something that will serve a need in downtown,” said a member of 1st Presbyterian Church in the LSJ on Feb. 17th.

As I said, this is a societal trend. It is a trend for Immanuel, too. Many of our volunteers are youthful retirees. We are a permission-giving church. That means if you have an idea or a vision that you feel spiritually led to pursue and if that idea fits with our Congregation’s Vision, we will give you the green light to start a whole new thing among us. We believe the Spirit gives you gifts and leads you to use them for Christ and the kingdom.

So as you come out of the full time labor force and begin the transition to “retirement” allow serving in and through the church to be a part of your new life. All will benefit.

A RELATED PIECE

In a piece related to both of the articles above, a new book, “The Pursuit of Happiness,” lists 7 traits of happy people:

  1. have high self-esteem

  2. feel in control of their lives

  3. have close friends or marriage

  4. work and leisure activities are engaging

  5. have a meaningful religious faith that is both full of hope and provides a supportive community

  6. are optimistic, outgoing and agreeable

  7. exercise and sleep enough

Now combine that with an older study showing that those who worship regularly live longer and healthier lives, and the wisdom of the Bible concerning worship and participation in the body of Christ are once more “proved” to have effects in this world and the world to come.

OTHER HOLY WEEK INSTRUCTION

The Bible records events on each day of this crucial week.  Though there are no services, here are the readings for your  home worship:

Monday, March 21 Tuesday, March 22 Wednesday, March 23
Isaiah 42:19  Isaiah 49:1-7 Isaiah 50:4-9a
Psalm 36:5-11 Psalm 71:1-14  Psalm 70
Hebrews 9:11-15 1Corinthians 1:18-31 Hebrews 12:1-3
John 12:1-11   John 12:20-36  John 13:21-32

Good Friday is by tradition a day of fasting. This is an all day fast, so that we only drink liquids. This so that by our hunger we will remember and meditate on the love and sacrifice of Jesus. If you were to do only part of it, then fast until supper or by skipping lunch. The three hours from 12 -3 p.m. are to be kept quietly and introspectively. At work, avoid others and work alone. If possible, read Scripture or devotional materials, if not at worship.

Holy Saturday is a day of preparation, anticipation, hope and joy, “It (God’s plan of salvation) is accomplished.” It is not a day of sorrowful feelings but of faithful activity for all.

SCRAPBOOKERS

Keep Saturday, April 16 open!  How does a day of scrapbooking sound with your Immanuel family!  Hours will be 10-4.  Final plans are underway for a great day of scrapbooking.  You may bring your own materials, or supplies will be available for purchase if you are in need of items.  All proceeds will go to the Road Rulz Fund.  Table space will be sold for $10 for ½ a table or $20 for a full table.  All monies raised during this Scrapbook Event will benefit the high school mission trip.  Watch for a sign up sheet in the church.  Check the Sunday bulletin and March newsletter for more details. Let's get out our photos, scissors, stickers, etc and support our high school youth mission trip.

WHO'S READY FOR SOME BASEBALL?

Outreach is!  They have 40 tickets reserved for Saturday, June 18, 2005.  This is the Saturday of Father’s Day weekend.  Why not take Dad out to the ol’ ballgame and show him a good time?  Or bring someone else.  This is open to Immanuel members and friends.  Last year we had 38 adults and kids enjoy a night of baseball and fireworks.  Come join the fun this year.  Tickets are still $7.50.  If you are interested and want to reserve a ticket, call Orv Erickson at 517.645.2865.

What are the Faith Factors?

These are the common threads found in the lives of young people who were raised and remained involved in a faith community. The parents who met in January felt a deep desire to work toward these goals to encourage and support the youth of Immanuel.

  1. Faith integrated into family identity and practice

  2. Three or more adult mentors of vital faith

  3. Three or more months of service in the name of Jesus Christ

  4.  Apprenticed early into leadership in their church

  5. Engaging, meaningful church experience in which youth are valued

  6. Excellent senior high/young adult ministry

  7. Encouraged by strong Christian friends

  8. Support within an engaging Christian community during a personal crisis

What can I do?

Here are some suggestions to put the first factor into practice.

  1. Begin daily family devotions.  This is a perfect time of year since we are in the season of Lent.  There are several devotional books (Davy and Goliath or Christ in Our Home) in the church entryway.  There are many more at places like the Gift and Bible Store.

  2. Pray with and for your child to model/practice.

  3. Read the Bible together.

  4. Sing church, VBS, church camp sounds together.

  5. Assure your child daily as he/she leaves for school “I’m praying for you today.”

  6. Serve together at church or in the community (soup kitchens, visiting/helping shut-ins, etc.)  Brainstorm things your child can do for others and then help do these acts of service.

  7. Make God part of your daily conversations with your child.

  8. Tell your child you love them….and that God does, too.

These are just a start.  If you have any activity suggestions that you would like to pass along to other parents please let Sue Schnarr, Mike Proper, Lyn Danes, Denise Lund (at the church office), or Pastor Rick know.  We can publish them in the next newsletter.

GOING ON VACATION?

When you go on vacation, let your dogs go, too.  Let them go to Kira Ayoub’s.  She’ll care for them as if they’re on vacation, too.  They’ll have plenty of space to roam and play.  989/224-2608.

…from Pr. Rick, for your prayers, patience and assistance during these weeks of back pain and rehabilitation, especially to Pr. Paul, the staff and the Council, who picked up my slack.

The Healthy Ministry Team would like to thank Mary Gehlhaar for her contribution of the beautiful cake for the affirmation of marriage evening.  It was a lovely addition to the evening and tasted good too!  A special thank you to Ernst Floeter for capturing the moments on film for us.  We would also like to thank everyone who made contributions to the evening.  Twelve couples participated and all enjoyed the evening.
