FROM PASTOR RICK’S COMPUTER:

LENT: RENEWAL AND PREPARATION

In the rhythm of the Church’s life we come again to Lent. It prepares us for God’s mighty act of salvation in the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the rhythms of life, we prepare for life changes. In the rhythm of life-lived-by-faith, we can see that each step is God preparing us for something in the future.

Religious people prepare with fasting, prayer and charity, as Jesus taught in Matthew 6. These, with our repentance, form the spiritual disciplines of the 40 days of Lent.

“Return to the Lord your God for he is gracious and merciful.” We sing the inviting words of the prophet Joel during Lent. God’s people need to turn back to him.

With repentance, fasting helps us return. Fasting is “Self”-denial. Fasting creates a hunger, an empty “space” within us. Deny yourself a regular meal and your stomach grows empty. Deny yourself a favorite TV show and your schedule has an empty space. Choose your fast, then ask, “With what will I fill my emptiness?”

  FAST…  FEAST…
from judging others; on Christ dwelling in them.
from emphasis on differences; on the unity of all life.
from apparent darkness; on the reality of all light.
from thoughts of illness; on the healing power of God.
  from discontent; on gratitude.
  from anger;  on patience.
  from bitterness;  on forgiveness.
from self-concern; on compassion for others.
  from discouragement;  on hope.
  from suspicion; on truth.
from thoughts that weaken; on promises that inspire.
from idle gossip; on purposeful silence.
from problems that overwhelm; on prayer that sustains.

--Thanks to Wesley Taylor, Tigard, Oregon.

Easter’s new life will come to you in the Father’s own time. Prepare for it. Blessed Lent, my brothers and sisters. Fast and feast.

ALMSGIVING

Lent is a season for almsgiving (“over and above” charitable work). Two needs were adopted by the Church Council to receive our special Lenten gifts.

1) The Bishop’s Mission Endowment Fund – Bishop Gary Hansen hopes to build a multi-million dollar endowment fund to: (a) pay tuition for all seminarians from our Synod; (b) fund new mission congregations in our Synod; and (c) build a Mission Center in DeWitt.[1]

2)       SIREN/Eaton Shelter Project – is our county’s program for homeless and/or abused families and children.

[1] If you would like to make a large pledge or gift to this cause, let Pr. Rick know. He will put you in touch with the Director.

Maundy Thursday Seder Meal
April 13, 2006

Mark your calendars for this night…a sign-up attendance form will be available in the Narthex during the month of March.  Join us as we gather around the Seder Table and experience one of the most important events in the Jewish Year.

PROVERBS: THEN AND NOW

“Early to bed, early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”

“Do not love sleep or you will grow poor.”

One is Ben Franklin; the other is the Proverbs. Do you know which is which? Starting Sunday, February 26th, Pastor’s Bible Study will be looking at the book of Proverbs. We will gather some of them and discuss where and how they are use in life and the Bible.

The Proverbs philosophy is that God has built in rules for all kinds of good and successful living. Wisdom is a type of faith that knows God and accepts his social rules leading to blessing.

Those of you who want to know more and live better are wise to attend the class. But you will have to take a chance of sorts, since Pastor can’t say yet how many sessions there will be. The lessons have not yet been organized.

A WORD FROM COUNCIL ON THE CHURCH STRUCTURE CHANGE

Over the years, our congregation has experienced significant growth.  We have moved from what is called a “family church”, in church growth parlance, to a “pastoral church,” to a “program church.”  As the names imply, a family church has the feel of a family and people enter the church through family relationships.  A pastoral church has the pastor as its center and new people come into the church through their contact with the pastor.  A program church has the church’s mission as the core and new people enter into the church through one or more missions or ministries of the church.

Based on guidance from the Synod office as well as what our congregation learned from the Bridgebuilders Program, the Council has voted to move forward in the direction of changing from a committee-based structure, which works well for family and pastoral churches, to a mission-based structure which seems to work best for program churches.

What we, the Council, learned from Bridgebuilders, and what we are working very hard to do, is to keep everyone informed at all stages of this structural change.  In the next few months, not only will we be drafting proposed amendments to the church’s bylaws to effectuate this change, we will also be providing the congregation with information about how this structural change will work within our church and how it will affect each of us personally.

We will look for ultimate congregational approval of the structural change at a specially-called congregational meeting to be held on Sunday, June 4, 2006.  At that time, we will vote as a congregation on the bylaw amendments that will be necessary to accomplish our structural change, effective September 1, 2006.  You will also have an opportunity, prior to the congregational meeting, to review the proposed bylaws, ask questions, get answers, and learn exactly what changes are proposed.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, NOW is the time to start asking your questions and voicing your concerns. NOW is the time to start contacting Council members.  We want your time-honored wisdom, your experience, and your help in this.

Please join on us Saturday, April 15th at 9:30am to help decorate the church.  We need approximately 10-12 volunteers and it should only take approximately 3 hours.  Please call Lisa Baptista at 230-6769 if you have the time to spare and would like to be a part of the team.

FEMALE VOTING MEMBER NEEDED

Inspiration, learning and business are what Synod Assemblies are about. Our North/East Lower Michigan Synod Assembly meets in south Lansing, May 21 (Sun. night) through May 23 (Tues. noon).

Our congregation is permitted 2 lay voting members. One has come from Church Council, Dan Landry. We need one female voting member. Please speak to Pr. Rick or the Church Office to volunteer or for questions.

Your expenses will be paid. We generally commute each day. You will need to want to have a good time, learn a lot and be willing to do some church business. You will need to attend most worship events, a learning workshop and plenary sessions.

EASTER BRUNCH

The Outreach Committee is coordinating the Easter breakfast which is held immediately after the first service Easter Sunday, April 16, 2006.  We are asking for volunteers to help with the breakfast.  We are looking for people to help bake breakfast casseroles, bake fruit breads or muffins, plus we need help with set up and clean up.  If you would like to help with the breakfast in some way, please call Orv Erickson at 645-2865.  There is no need to call to attend the breakfast.  Just come, enjoy and help celebrate our Risen Lord Jesus!
