Minutes
March 4, 2002

 

Present:

The meeting was brought to order at 7:35 p.m. by Council President Den Graeber.  Management opened with devotions.

At Council Retreat, a buddy system was developed to keep all Council Members aware of what is going on if they miss a meeting, etc. Karen Eichelberger reviewed goals and the theme of the retreat (transformation), along with the first draft of the Council Covenant for 2002. Discussion followed.

MOTION MADE BY FRED GEHLHAAR TO ACCEPT THE COUNCIL COVENANT FOR 2002 AS WRITTEN, WITH AN ADDITION TO #7. Seconded by Donna Gibbons. MOTION CARRIED.

REPORTS

Secretary's Report - none

January 2002 and February 2002 minutes not available for approval.

Treasurer's Report - see written reports for December 2001, January and February 2002

MOTION MADE BY MATT CERMAK TO ACCEPT THE DECEMBER 2001 TREASURER'S REPORT AS AMENDED. Seconded by Donna Gibbons.  MOTION CARRIED.

MOTION MADE BY BOB EICHELBERGER TO ACCEPT THE JANUARY 2002 TREASURER'S REPORT AS PRESENTED. Seconded by Matt Cermak. MOTION CARRIED.

$20,000 plus in the red at this time. Council thinks they should let the congregation know. Council wants Management to look at how benevolence is taken from the building and general funds. Needs to present the results at the next Council Meeting.

Committee Reports

Health Ministry - see written report of February 20, 2002
MOTION MADE BY DONNA GIBBONS TO ACCEPT JEAN FOLK AS A MEMBER OF HEALTH MINISTRY FOR 2002. Seconded by Fred Koos. MOTION CARRIED. Remainder of report as written.

Management Committee -see written report of February 18, 2002
Regarding sound equipment - different ways were shown. Item will be tabled until we have funds. Remainder of report as written. No Council Action required.

Memorial Committee - no report
No one present.

Outreach Committee - see written report of February 12, 2002
Coffee hour sign up sheet was passed around. Committee is looking at having the art open house again during the Island Art Festival on the first Saturday in August. Remainder of report as written. No Council Action required.

Parish Education Committee - see written report of February 11, 2002
Committee reviewed some new curriculum and rejected it. Remainder of report as written. No Council Action required.

Property Committee - see written report of February 23, 2002
Reviewed report. Discussion on electric poles in front of church that need to be removed. Kitchen committee used to be a part of Women of the ELCA. They would like to be an off- shoot of Property Committee.

MOTION MADE BY FRED GEHLHAAR TO HAVE A KITCHEN SUB-COMMITTEE AS A PART OF PROPERTY COMMITTEE.  Seconded by Donna Gibbons. MOTION CARRIED.

Note that the high chairs keep being moved to the cold room. Not sure who and why.  Chairs need to be available to use on Sundays.  Kids are sliding down the banister and putting themselves in danger as well as leaving  black marks on the new paint. Needs to be stopped.  Remainder of report as written.

Stewardship Committee - no written report
No one present from Stewardship. No Council Action required.

Worship Committee - no written report
Lent dramas are going well. Average attendance is 30. Regarding surveys for the third service, they are going to start doing them after church services. Discussion followed. No Council Action required.

Youth Committee- see written report of February 21, 2002
Youth would like to do youth service after Lent, during the week, every week.

MOTION MADE BY WAYNE CHRISTIANSEN TO ALLOW YOUTH TO BE ABLE TO HAVE A WEEKLY YOUTH SERVICE. Seconded by Matt Cermak, Discussion followed.  MOTION CARRIED.

Seconded by Wayne Christiansen. MOTION CARRIED.

Also from Youth - MOTION MADE BY WAYNE CHRISTIANSEN TO ACCEPT HEATH BUCKLEY AS A MEMBER OF YOUTH COMMITTEE FOR 2002. Seconded by Fred Koos. MOTION CARRIED.

NEW BUSINESS
There is a Healthy Congregations Workshop coming up. Anyone could attend, and all are encouraged to go. 

Barb Paulins will replace Deb Stopper as Recording Secretary effective April 1st.

MOTION MADE BY FRED KOOS TO NOMINATE BARB PAULINS AS COUNCIL RECORDING SECRETARY FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2002. Seconded by Matt Cermak. MOTION CARRIED. MOTION MADE BY ERNIE ZAKRAJSEK TO CLOSE NOMINATIONS AND ACCEPT BARB PAULINS AS COUNCIL RECORDING SECRETARY FOR THE REMAINDER FOR 2002. Seconded by Donna Gibbons. MOTION CARRIED.

Holbrook Head Start wishes to use parking lot for car wash on April 20th.

MOTION MADE BY MATT CERMAK TO ALLOW HOLBROOK HEAD START TO USE THE PARKING LOT ON APRIL 20™ FOR A CAR WASH. Discussion followed. MOTION CARRIED.

Synod Assembly registration is due by April 5th - need to find representatives for the Assembly May 19th through May 21st. Passed out a copy of the February 2002 Parish Paper - asked that everyone read it for the April meeting.

A Mutual Ministry Support Task Force has been formed. Members are Larry Kruth, Fred Gehlhaar, Bob Kenworthy, Fred Roush and John Weigel.

A Good Samaritan Fund Team needs to be in place for 2002.

MOTION BY FRED KOOS TO APPROVE BILL GIBBONS, DENISE LUND, MARLEANE TEAHAN AND RICHARD WELLMAN AS THE GOOD SAMARITAN FUND TEAM FOR 2002. Seconded by Fred Gehlhaar. Discussion followed. MOTION CARRIED.

The annual church calendar was reviewed.
