LUTHERAN FAITH 102: LAW AND GOSPEL -- Taken together, “Law and Gospel” form the basic framework Lutherans use to interpret the Bible. Taken together, “it” is our point of view about what God says and does. Moreover, they are pretty simple concepts to learn. Pastor’s Sunday School class will be an opportunity to become a more knowledgeable Lutheran. Starting January 31 and continuing in February, you will: 1) Learn and discuss the concepts; 2) Find them in the Bible; 3) Practice them in study. Along the way, you may learn big words, such as hermeneutic and dialectic...or not. You may learn the secret message of almost every one of my sermons. I will even award a “Lutheran 102 Completion Certificate,” if you wish. But you’ve got to come.
USHERING -- Here’s your chance to serve by Ushering. There will be ushering training (approx 1‐1/2 hrs) Monday, January 18 in the church Narthex at 7:00 pm. Additional ushers are greatly needed. Please feel free to come for refresher training, too. Call Larry Kruth (626‐2383) if you have any questions and if you plan to attend or call Bev Becker (627‐2025). ANNUAL LUGNUT OUTING Mark your calendars for Friday, June 25, 2010 for Immanuel’s next Lansing Lugnut outing. Bobblehead Giveaway Night at Oldsmobile Park as well as a LAFCU fireworks night. Tickets are $9 a seat this year ($1 increase) and can be reserved by calling Orv Erickson at 517-645-2865, emailing him at oerickson@sbcglobal.net or just see him after church some Sunday. Tickets must be ordered and paid for by Sunday, May 23, 2010. We have 70 seats reserved but we can get more. Come join us this year for a great night out with the family. GO NUTS!!!!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED -- At the congregation meeting on November 8 you voted to reduce office staff and custodian hours. Now we need volunteers to help in the church office on Fridays. Assisting the custodians can be anytime. Please call the office (627-6310) to volunteer.
MISSION SUPPORT ALTERNATIVE OFFERED -- Due to concerns and requests of members, the Church Council voted to offer an alternative Mission Support/Benevolence option next year. Mission Support or Benevolence is the way members participate in the Great Commission, to go to all the nations with the Gospel. (Matt. 28:19-20) You may choose to have your support sent to Lutheran World Relief (www.lwr.org) and Stony Lake Lutheran Camp (www.elcalivingwater.org) rather than to the North/West Lower Michigan Synod ELCA. LWR is an inter-Lutheran cooperative agency with ministries the world over. Stony Lake camp is where our kids usually go to church camp. It needs a new boy’s bathhouse desperately.
YAM -- Y.A.M. stands for Young Adult Ministry. I believe that post-high school is a tough time for our young adults. This is true especially now. Last year some of us in our Immanuel family signed up to be a mentor/listener/friend to a young adult. The first year was deemed a success with ideas for year two. For those of you who befriended a young adult, I hope you will continue. TEDDY BEAR MINISTRY -- The Teddy Bear Ministry is a part of our outreach ministry that glorifies the Lord by bringing comfort, smiles, God’s love and care to those in need. Thanks to the entire congregation for your support of this ministry. When you give a bear to someone, if you can, please replace with a new, non-talking, non-musical teddy bear or put $10 in a pew envelope marked ‘Teddy Bear Ministry’.
